APRIL MEETING

On Saturday 10th we were given a fascinating illustrated talk by Caroline Alexander, keeper of costume and textiles at the Harris Museum in Preston.
She talked about the audit by the museum of their collection of textiles and costume and their current exhibition –“Embellished: The Art of Fabulous Fabrics” which is on until November this year (possibly April 2011)

This exhibition shows a vast range of items, some of which have not been seen for many years including Horrocks’ Fashion dresses.  Made by a local firm whose heyday was in the 1950’s, the dresses are made from high quality cotton renowned for the striking floral patterns.

The musuem has been going through every item in their collection, noting the condition and details, photographing and re-packing – there are 6000+ items!
The team have been assisted by a group of skilled volunteers, many of whom come from local branches of the Guild.

Caroline would be very happy to organise tour visits for groups and is of course always looking for volunteers.

Think this exhibition is a must for 2010.
